In the background there are blurred green trees and shrubs, and the outline of a building in the distance.Originally from Mexico City, Mariana is a graduate from the Ethnomusicology program at Memorial University. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Brandon University, Manitoba. As a pianist and singer, Mariana has conducted several children’s music projects and a seniors choir. She is a dedicated scholar and an enthusiast of the connections between music, belonging, and stories. With a passion for music and research, Mariana strives to learn ways in which music could contribute to social justice and change. She is thrilled to join the MusicNL team as Manager of the Instrumental Connection Program, which aims to build connections between newcomers, recent graduates and the local music community.

What is your position with Music NL?
I am the manager of Instrumental Connections Program. I also fill the functions of community engagement and diversity coordinator.

What is the Instrumental Connections program?
This is a mentoring program that will provide those who work in the music sector valuable connections to grow their music career through the process of networking. Newfoundland and Labrador’s instrumental connections program will be the first music industry focused connector program in Canada. The program works through referrals. These referrals may be potential employers, influential leaders within their industry, or other people (Connectors) who will benefit from meeting with a skilled professional (Connectees).

Typically, you try to meet the participants in person. Will the program be able to continue through this latest lockdown?
Connectors are asked to refer the Connectee to a minimum of three people in their network, and then each of these people are asked to refer the Connectee to three more. Since that can happen virtually through zoom or other platforms, we really only need to recruit people and connect them at this moment.

How can someone join Music NL?
You just have to join through our website musicnl.ca/join-now. We are currently giving a 50% discount on the membership when you complete the COVID-19 Safe Work course. You share the certificate of completion with me or info@musicnl.ca. Then you fill out the form to register as a band, artitst, industry professional or student. Hit submit!
