Mr. H Presents – Make Music Happen
Since its inception in June 2010, Mr. H Presents has offered students a platform for experiencing live music. Through this growing organization, teacher Paul Heppleston has provided resources, venues, and mentoring, in an effort to help students develop their musical interests and talents. Some Mr. H alumni have gone on to launch their musical careers, complete professional recordings, showcase at East Coast Music Week, and more.
On October 12th and 13th, Mr. H Presents held the sixth annual Make Music Happen Conference in Corner Brook. Twenty-nine aspiring young songwriters spent two days at Corner Brook Regional High school developing their ideas under the mentorship of well-established artists. Through a variety of workshop sessions, students worked with professionals to hone their craft and receive guidance on writing, performing, and other aspects of the music industry; they also had opportunities to collaborate with their peers and showcase their talents. A songwriter’s circle capped off day one and a student showcase brought the conference to a close on day two. The songwriter’s circle was open to the public and featured the five songwriting session leaders: Phil Churchill & Geri Hollett (from The Once), Kim Harris, Jake Nicoll and Jon Pike (BRDGS).
First-time attendees and veteran performers alike found inspiration in the sessions, as connections were made and young musicians crowded each available space to share the projects they had been working on. If the quality and enthusiasm of this conference are indicative of musical prosperity, the future of NL music is glaringly bright.
