Brian Cherwick is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed throughout North America, Europe and Ukraine as a soloist, with a number of folk ensembles, and as leader of the speed-folk band The Kubasonics. With a Ph.D. in Ukrainian Folklore and Ethnomusicology from the University of Alberta (1999), and special studies at the National Musical Academy of Ukraine (1987-88), his research work has documented musical traditions of Ukrainians throughout western Canada and western Ukraine. He has composed, arranged and conducted music for choirs, dance ensembles, film scores and radio. Brian Cherwick’s solo shows are a fascinating excursion through the world of Ukrainian folk music with a unique blend of entertainment and educational experience, spiced with a healthy dose of humour. In addition to his work as a performing musician, Cherwick is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Folklore at MUN and a substitute Music Specialist with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District.
