Bio
"Jerry Stamp is releasing five albums this year - what are you doing?" -The Scope Magazine
Jerry Stamp hates writing in the third person about himself and pretending somebody else did it! So he won't.
Here is the quick and dirty: I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2002 and promptly moved to Toronto with my band King Nancy. We lived there for four years slugging it out, playing gigs, making records (3 studio albums, and 2 live albums) and touring anywhere that would have us. But after four years of the aforementioned slugging We decided it was time to move home, get away from the business of music and get back to the love of it. So we wrote one last album while in Toronto ('This Is Not A High-Five') and recorded it with renowned indie producer Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, Jim Guthrie, Two Minute Miracles) before we packed up the van and took her home.
Once home I began playing high energy, emotionally intense solo gigs and focusing on that as my main musical output. I took on a regular weekly gig to keep me on my toes and began writing and rearranging songs for solo performance; quickly garnering a new fan base. Last year I played over 120 shows, got myself a home studio setup and began recording. I released 'Racing Bad Weather' in December of 2008 in conjunction with an Eastern Canadian tour. The winter of 2009 I began writing and haven't stopped yet. That was when I decided to push myself to release 5 albums in one calendar year. With 'Racing Bad Weather' already out and plans to release 2 Christmas albums just in time for the yule season of 2009, I had to squeeze out two more albums. The lengthy titled 'There Is Something In Me That Makes Me Like To Think I Wish I Could Be' to be released in July, and the followup 'Bloodwork' to be released in late august. Each album containing 13 tracks of brand new material. Written, recorded and mixed at home.
The Past: I grew up in St.John's, Newfoundland, edge of the known universe, where old world and new world collide. It is impossible to not absorb that culture and make it part of you and your music. Many years of singing in award winning and world traveling choirs led me to enter the Bachelor of Classical Music degree program at Memorial University (yes, I sing opera!). I figured if I was going to pursue a career in the music industry I had best know what I was at! Since then I have been featured numerous times on TV and Radio and toured extensively as both a soloist and as frontman for the band King Nancy. I have been the recipient of grants from FACTOR (of which I am also an accredited Juror), The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, and MusicNL, and have showcased at CMW, JUNOFest, the ECMAs, WEMF, COCA, the George Street Festival, The George Street Mardi Gras, and many other festivals. I have shared the stage with the likes of Broken Social Scene, Ameilia Curran, Oh Susanna, I Mother Earth, Sam Roberts, Murray McLaughlin, Danko Jones, Pilate (now Known as Pilot Speed), Mobile, and the list goes on and continues just as varied as it started. I have been hailed as a type O of the music industry. I can play anywhere with anyone. I have been nominated for two MusicNL awards (best Rock, Male Artist).
"Excellent songwriter. And without question the best singer on the island (of Newfoundland) today" -Chris Batstone, Assistant Program Director 97-5 K-Rock
"What is truly impressive about Stamp is his impressive vocal abilities and his heartfelt songwriting" -Kevin Kelly, The Newfoundland Herald
