Bio

Founded in 2003, Lady Cove Women’s Choir was named for the community of Lady Cove, in Trinity Bay on Newfoundland’s rugged yet beautiful east coast. Representative of the spirit and philosophy of the choir, “cove” is “a small sheltered inlet or bay”. Lady Cove Women’s Choir is a community of women – a haven where members come, not only to explore their own musicianship, but to share their lives and experiences in a sisterhood with other women. The power, inspiration and trust shared by this diverse group of women are integral factors in the Choir becoming one of Canada’s leading women’s ensembles in a remarkably short period of time.

Founding Artistic Director, Kellie Walsh, is at the heart of the choir’s vision and success. Kellie’s dream to form a choir comprised entirely of women came to life when she returned to Newfoundland to complete her Masters degree in choral conducting at Memorial University. Her passion for music and fierce pride in the women of Newfoundland & Labrador have been the building blocks of the choir’s mission to reveal the strength, versatility and beauty of women’s choral music.

The members of Lady Cove Women’s Choir, both amateur and professional musicians, are committed to performing at the highest professional standard. The choir is a strong supporter of the Arts and regularly commissions or revives choral works for women’s voices. It proudly awards the annual Lady Cove Bursary to a young, aspiring musician from this province. Supporting the local community is another important part of Lady Cove‘s mission as it assists local women’s and children’s special interest groups through charitable activities.

In six short seasons, Lady Cove Women’s Choir has won the hearts of audiences through performances ranging in style from classical, gospel, and jazz to Latin America and contemporary Canadian. The choir has been featured nationally on CBC radio and twice won first place in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In August 2008, Lady Cove placed first in the Female Choir category at the Béla Bartók International Contemporary Music Choir Competition in Debrecen, Hungary. Most recently, Kellie Walsh was named Emerging Artist of the Year by the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council for her achievements in and dedication to choral music in this province.
