St. John’s, NL: Brand new songs created over the course of the Challenge to be showcased at free event on Sunday, June 4th, 2017.
This coming weekend (June 2-4), a group of local songwriters will come together to write in collaboration with each other and under the mentorship of nationally prominent songwriters, Rob Wells and Shobha, as well as locals Mallory Johnson and Chris LeDrew. The weekend will consist of group songwriting sessions, constructive song critiques, one-on-one mentorship sessions, a Skype discussion panel with guest songwriter Christopher Ward, culminating in a public performance at the JAG Hotel at 8pm on Sunday June 4.
The local participants of the 2017 MusicNL Bell Media Songwriting Challenge are Andrew Rodgers and Stephen Green of Fairgale, Jonathan Reid and Mike Maddox of Beauwater, Karla Pilgrim (The Secrets), Marquita Walsh (Streel), Mike Kirby (Cabbages & Kings), Jordan Coaker (Waterfront Fire and Quote the Raven), Kirsten Rodden-Clarke (Quote the Raven), Andrew Boyd and Ben Thistle (Waterfront Fire), Bailey Jordan-Neil, Carolann Fowler, Daniel Adams, Derek Graham, Rachel Cousins and Virginia Fudge.
Rob Wells is a multi-platinum, award-winning producer/song writer based in Canada, and is one half of the writing/production team The Fourth Floor with singer, songwriter & recording artist Shobha whose music has been garnering attention from around the world. Upon joining forces with Rob Wells as the songwriting/production team THE FOURTH FLOOR, Shobha signed a world-wide publishing deal with Sony/ATV. While currently writing for today’s top artists in the US and Canada including the top 40 hit “Dizzy” by Sony’s Tyler Shaw, Shobha has contributed to the soundtrack of Degrassi Next Class on Netflix with 5 new songs including the main theme as artist and songwriter.
Mallory Johnson hails from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador but is currently living in Toronto, Ontario. Well known as a member of the celtic family group, “The Cormiers”, Mallory is now pursuing a career as a solo country music artist. In 2015, Mallory travelled to Nashville & Muscle Shoals where she recorded her debut album (release date TBA) produced by Big Hit Records owner, and multi-platinum artist Sammy Kershaw. Her debut single “Tupelo” created quite the buzz on the first day of it’s release, skyrocketing to #6 on the Canadian Country iTunes Top Songs List and remained in the top 50 for five days. The music video for “Tupelo” was also aired on GAC, and featured on Roughstock.com and CMT.com.
Chris LeDrew has spent much of his life honing a busy and successful music career. He has released two award-winning and critically-acclaimed solo albums, as well as one with the band Brothers in Stereo, which was nominated for three East Coast Music Awards and took home the 2003 CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award. LeDrew’s music has received widespread international radio play, and he has performed all over North America in clubs, concert halls, arenas, and on national radio/television shows. He has opened for the likes of Bryan Adams, Blue Rodeo, the Tragically Hip, April Wine, Sam Roberts and many more. He has published co-writes with Lennie Gallant, Barry Canning, Larry Foley, Mallory Johnson, as well as Nashville songwriters Darryl Burgess and Joshua Grange.
The public is invited to attend a free presentation of the songs written during the Challenge at 8pm on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Exile in the Jag Hotel.
