MUSICNL AND CBC NEGOTIATIONS- A STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD

In January, CBC NL approached MusicNL about the possibility of MusicNL members and students from CNA being able to make exclusive use of Studio F. CBC’s Studio F is a world class recording studio that has hosted countless memorable music sessions, live recordings and radio productions over the years. Since that date, preliminary discussions between CBC and MusicNL regarding the proposed project have been held. On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, a private event was held to gauge interest and inspire excitement about the potential upcoming partnership. This event did not mark a public launch of this project, but an information session for a small number of stakeholders.

There is currently no Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with respect to this project, no formal research has been conducted regarding its viability and the proposed partnership has not been officially launched. Before any of that happens, we will be conducting in-depth stakeholder consultations with members and the public to determine the impact of the project on the industry, with a particular eye to any possible negative effects it may have on studio owners. It is our hope that a partnership such as this can strengthen the recording industry and add new capabilities to our studio members’ existing capabilities. That is our hope, but if MusicNL and CBC NL are not able to address the concerns of stakeholders, the partnership will not proceed and an MOU will not be signed.

There is also a conversation happening in the community regarding an economic impact study which was commissioned by MusicNL. Specifically, the draft study expressed that there were gaps in the recording industry and made an erroneous assertion that final album mastering services are not available in Newfoundland and Labrador. In light of this and other input from the community, MusicNL returned to the consultant and requested a second round of consultations, in order to amend and add to the study. For context, the draft economic impact study is a separate piece of research that has been ongoing for over a year and did not precipitate the the proposed partnership initiated by CBC NL.

MusicNL is committed to bolstering the music community in Newfoundland and Labrador. We would be remiss as the music industry association of this province if we did not investigate the opportunity to give our members access to a studio of the calibre of Studio F. That is what we are now doing.

We will continue to work for and with all of our members to create opportunities for success in the industry.  In the coming months we will be reaching out to formally gather insight and recommendations from the community about the proposed partnership with CBC. We look forward to the input of the community as we do this.
