Newfoundland is not traditionally a hotbed for Hip Hop music and culture. However, recently there’s been a developing young scene, all awaiting the first act to achieve national recognition.
ChessClub is: Matt Murphy, Andrew Lahey, James Piercey and producer Adrian Gagnon. Since its formation, they have shared stages with notable acts including Pharoahe Monch, Slaughterhouse, Shad, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Camp Lo, The Beatnuts and Belly, among others.
They’ve released a critically acclaimed EP entitled When It Rains (under Large LIVE n’ Direct). Following this release, they’ve received praise from Alan Cross, Exclaim! and a range of music blogs, along with being deemed by AUX as among the “7 Canadian rappers you need to hear”.
On September 23rd the lead single “Half/Dead” was released, accompanied by a music video produced entirely by the group. The group’s ECMA nominated debut LP as ChessClub was released via Noisey on Dec. 10th.
ChessClub’s next project is slated for a 2017 release.
