Brad Jefford – Guitarist/Composer/Arranger/Educator/Improviser
Brad Jefford is establishing himself as one of the leading figures for jazz and creative music in St. John’s, NL. Jefford was bitten by the jazz bug at an early age and was very much drawn to the improvisations that dominated this musical language. He decided to explore this language receiving his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and continuing to further his studies under some of the world’s most notable guitarists and educators including Mick Goodrick. As a young composer, arranger, improviser, and music educator, Jefford is always looking to push his musical ventures in new directions, fusing his unique guitar style with each new musical moment he experiences.
Always in demand as a recording artist Jefford’s guitar sound can be heard on a number of recordings including his own debut recording with Brad Jefford Trio “Ageless”. This self produced and recorded album received a nomination for Jazz/Blues Album of the Year at the 2011 Music NL Awards. Jefford’s voice as an improviser is also featured heavily on Curtis Andrews “The Offering of Curtis Andrews”, an album that won the 2009 Scope Atlantis Prize for Best Album of the Year. Jefford has an identifiable guitar sound that can also be heard with JazzEast, Havana to Canada, Other People, Spirit of Newfoundland, and various other projects in and around St. John’s.
With a strong interest in community and cultural development Jefford uses his expertise and experience to give back to the musical community from which he came. He recently created the “St. John’s Jazz Sessions”, a bi-weekly jazz concert and jam session hosted by the Brad Jefford Trio . This session aims to unify our jazz community as the band invites local musicians and improvisers to come join them on stage to create and improvise together in a supportive environment.
In addition to his performing schedule Jefford keeps a busy schedule as a musical educator and mentor in the community. In the past few years he has helped shape the sounds of many professional musicians in St. John’s. Paul Earle from “Idlers/Skylarks”, Darren Brown from “Burning Hell/Duane Andrews”, Josh Bourden from “Matt Hornell Diamond Minds/Thee Internet”, and Adam Hefferman from “Hear/Say” are just a few of the many musicians in our community that he has worked with.
